Dressing URBAN doesn’t mean limiting yourself to one precise style. Quite the opposite in fact. The urban t shirt of today combines many trends and branches out in loads of different directions. Urban subcultures have played a whopping big part in influencing these designs. We’ve already had a little look into hip hop tees and that branch of urban fashion, so what other urban t shirt styles should we look out for?

Punk is a big influence on the street-wear fashion of today. Maybe the loose, ripped, anarchistic style worn by the original punks of the 70s is not so common. But symbols of this scene and toned-down characteristics of the style are being re-introduced and re-invented into modern urban t shirts. Phrases in the newspaper-cut-out style of the Sex Pistols’ ‘Never Mind the Bullocks’ album are often featured along with jagged-edged pics of punk stars, placed roughly, unevenly and boldly on the t shirt front. The shape of the urban t shirt can be unsymmetrical as though torn in a mosh-pit (like the pic on the left).

Some Urban t shirts also gear more towards the Pop side of city life (Top Right Pic). This includes bright rainbow colours, bubbly ‘Top of the Pops’-style writing and simple but bold, bright pictures. Cute or witty sayings are often emphasized. The shape is usually regular t shirt shape. Andy Warhol style Pop Art is also commonly featured.

The Rock culture of course also features in modern streetwear fashion. As rock bands these days reach out to more and more people, and reap the benefits of the commercially-run music world, the fashion trend has also delved further into the mainstream than previously so. A rock-style urban t shirt will often include skull & cross-bone designs, specific band names, images of guitars, drum kits, microphones, stages, rock stars, or typical rock & roll-type phrases (like ‘drugs, sex and rock & roll’).

As we touched on before, the Vintage and the Retro now play a crucial role in defining urban t shirt designs. The fashion of those memorable past eras, the 50s, 60s, 70s and 80s, was cool. So we’re bringing it back. Not in full swing, but taking bits and pieces and combining them with the new. A modern popular vintage-style t shirt frequently includes faded images of old slogans and advertisements or old TV programmes like The A Team, Sesame Street and Nightrider. Remember those? Even if you’re too young to, you’ll look cool wearing the t shirt!

All of these styles and characteristics are regularly combined together in one big modern awesome mix. The urban t shirt is versatile. There’s a lot out there – you’ll find whatever you want if you just have a little browse…and keep stopping by here with us!

The Urban T Shirt comes in many forms and brings together many styles. One of the most prominent of those styles is Hip-Hop. Hip Hop Tees can be seen on teenagers and young adults from the streets of the Bronx to England’s posh and pleasant countryside. So people like this style. People all over the world celebrate the music, the artists and the culture – and have been doing so progressively and increasingly since it was born in the 80s…

But what is Hip Hop fashion? And what do Hip Hop Tees look like?

Back in the ‘old-skool’ hip hop days of the 1980s, renown and established sportswear companies and fashion brands like Kangol, Adidas, Le Coq and Pro-Keds became linked with the rising music style and culture. Underneath their big black bomber jackets, hip-hop icons would usually wear a bright coloured labelled urban t shirt, usually loose and baggy. Of course the style of hip hop tees worn by the icons of the time, like the Fresh Prince and Big Daddy Kane, were also worn by the people into that scene.

From the 1990s and onward, loads of artists started up their own fashion labels – like P Diddy, Nelly, Wu-Tang Clan, Jay Z, 50 Cent, Eminem, 2Pac and Outkast and lots more. One of the popular ways to express your love of hip-hop music and fit into the scene is by wearing hip hop tees and hip hop clothing from one of the clothing lines started up by these artists.

Another way to dress hip hop and clearly express your love for the music is through t shirts with graphics of the music stars and icons themselves. This way you can truly pay homage to those respected artists at the forefront of the scene. Probably the most popular icon to illustrate the front of hip hop tees and urban t shirts around the globe is 2 Pac.

Many people also represent the movement with other symbols of hip hop centering on their urban t shirt. These include grafitti writing, grafitti-style characters, turntables, break dancers, body poppers, microphones, city outlines and boom boxes.Phrases and common hip-hop slang written in grafitti-style writing is often combined with these other symbols. On the other end of the spectrum, hip hop tees can also be completely plain black or white and baggy, with chains, flatcaps, low-hanging jeans, and other accessories projecting the hip hop look.

Recent trends in hip hop fashion can be seen to be reverting back to the ‘old school’. But instead of adopting the Fresh Prince style hiphop wear, its being directed more towards old school punk/hipster style clothing. The urban t shirt worn by many of the current big artists, such as Pharrell and Missy Elliot, is more than often a vintage style t shirt with shorter arm sleeves or a polo shirt.

1. First of all you need to think about the design. What do you want displayed on the front of your urban t shirt? Have you seen any images, designs, patterns or logos that inspire you? If not, then go for a walk around town and get inspired. Pay attention to everything. Other people’s t shirts, adverts that you see, posters for concerts, cool buildings, graffiti, album covers, modern art etc. Another option is to think of something to have written on your urban t shirt. Is there anything you really wanna say to the world? Any quotes from movies or songs that you absolutely love? Any running jokes you have with your friends? These phrases or statements can be printed on the t shirt in awesome graffiti-style lettering. Designing the t shirt is your chance to be creative, so have a good long think about it.

2. Go buy a plain t shirt, unless you have one already. Preferably a light color – to allow your design to really show. Again the color choice is entirely up to you, but the more intricate the design, the lighter the shade should be. Your urban t shirt should be completely yours and should only express the concept behind the design. So avoid buying t shirts with visible logos, woven patterns or any kind of different textures. If you begin the process with just a plain t shirt in its simplest form, then you have the creative freedom to go in any direction you like. You will create your own completely unique and original urban t shirt.

3. For the final stage, you have 2 options; printing or spray-painting. For a safer, more detailed and longer-lasting effect, take your t shirt and design to a print shop. The making of an urban t shirt is no new challenge for a print shop. They should be fully familiar with and experienced in this process. They can therefore give you tips on how big to make the graphic and what colors work best with the t shirt you’ve brought. Choosing where to place the design is another crucial decision to make. Central on the chest area is most common on an urban t shirt, but positioning it to one side or even on the back can look really cool and urban.

If you wanna save your pennies, then spray-painting is a cheaper option. To do this, you need to create a stencil. Copy your graphic onto a large sheet of sticky-back plastic and then cut it out carefully using a Stanley knife or scissors, cutting exactly along the outline and not a millimeter out. This should leave a sheet of sticky-back plastic with a hole in the shape of your design. Next, buy some spray-paint from an art shop or graffiti store. Peel off the white paper from the sticky-back plastic and then stick it onto your urban t shirt. The last thing to do is spray – and make sure you do this lightly! Leave it to dry for a few hours then peel the plastic off and you’ll have your very own urban t shirt!

But what is this modern fashion trend of which i speak?

The urban t shirt is a combination of punk, hip-hop and pop brought together in a funky, wide-ranging line of fashion styles that represent urban culture and everything that is inherent in it, such as TV, music, pop art, industry, production, originality and sexuality.
 
Mass production is not associated with this modern urban style. Hundreds of street brands, both tiny and large, have sprung out of this developing movement, creating thousands of diverse street-wear designs and funky unique, sometimes hand-made, clothes.

As today’s subcultures, fashion styles and music genres mix and combine, big, familiar brand logos no longer dictate the design of the urban t shirt. It’s about being unique and about representing whichever part of this modern mixture of urban culture you slot into. The public now decide what’s hot and what’s not, not the brands.
 
The urban t shirt plus all the other urban-style clothing pieces have crossed the borders of many different sub cultural fashion styles;  punk, skater, surfer, hip-hop, jock, pop and also now take from and influence the mainstream. This diversity is stretched even more so by the mix of old and new. The extensive urban t shirt collection available today often draws upon vintage and retro looks from past eras, but has turned these styles into fresh new creative urban fashion.
 
Because of this diversity, there’s something for everyone when it comes to urban clothing, ranging from early teens to those in their 40s, and sometimes beyond. This assorted mix of people, although perhaps differing in age, lifestyle, sex and musical/artistic tastes, can relate and communicate with each other through a mutual bond of self-expression via urban fashion.
